A Massachussefts outfit whose album is full of interesting and quite imaginative pop/folk-rock, obscure enough to have been reissued. Apart from a cover of Tim Hardin's Hang On To A Dream, all the songs were penned by Paul Applebaum. It's certainly worth hearing.

Kissing Spell (en inglés, Embrujo que besa) era en un principio un trío: Juan Carlos Tato Gómez, Carlos Fernández y Ernesto Aracena habían tocado música brasileña juntos mientras los dos primeros aún estaban en el colegio. Ya como quinteto, comenzaron a elaborar material principalmente en inglés, además de musicalizaciones de poemas de Federico García Lorca y Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer.

Damon - Song Of A Gypsy 1970 (psychedelic)

The Damon recordings are amongst the most sought-after and widely-loved of the late-sixties underground scene. Simply put, they convey emotion and power in a very concise and believable way. Song Of A Gypsy is is an excellent psychedelic album and both gatefold/non-gatefold versions are monster rarities. There's lots of fuzz guitar and a mystical feel about tracks like Do You and The Night. I Feel Your Love which has a sleepy, stoned atmosphere sounding rather similar to The Deep. Another track, Birds Fly So High, has 'snake charming' music, again creating a sort of Eastern mystical feel.
Based in Los Angeles, David Del Conte and Charlie Carey had already pursued careers in popular music for many years before deciding to embrace the underground rock movement. Del Conte released a considerable number of 45s; it is possible that as much as half of his discography will be found to be too early to fall within the time-frame of this book. The last recordings he made pre-Damon (aside from a handful of acetates never made available to the public) may be of interest to readers. As Damon Lane, he issued at least three singles on the Del Con label - these possess a unique Byrdsy jangle over which his trademark authoritative voice presides.
The first Damon single has a non-album 'B' side and a different lead vocal than the album version of the 'A' side. (It is, by all accounts, significantly rarer than the album and fortunately these tracks are included as one side of a 7" EP of bonus material with the reissue on the Little Indians label.) The record set the tone of the band's campaign which ran the course of 1968 - the message of love and self-expression coupled with an almost arrogant disregard for the establishment:
The album itself is made up of (similarly) short, urgent tracks that overflow with Carey's amazing distorted leads and Del Conte's powerful, otherworldly voice. The title track opens Side One in dramatic fashion; the opening lyric "Today I feel like cryin', Today I feel like dyin'" delivered in a most convincing manner. It's obvious right away that you're listening to something very special. If there really is such a thing as psychedelic music, this is surely it.
It should be noted that the sound quality of this album is exemplary. Like the Cykle album, the fidelity is so good that even the bootlegs impress...
Del Conte and Carey, despite living roughly a thousand miles apart, continue to perform together and collaborated on a new album project in 1998. The resulting CD release, Gypsy Eyes has much to recommend it, not the least of which is the fact that it sounds like a second Damon album! The closing track, The Gift, is truly mindblowing, as good as anything on the first album.
Atley Yeager subsequently performed and recorded as Atlee in Southern California.
You can also find the LP version of Song Of A Gypsy on Love, Peace And Poetry: American Psychedelic Music (LP & CD), but obviously, the Damon album is an essential purchase.

Pajaro Alberto y Sacrosaurio - Viaje Fantástico 1974

lberto Isiordia mejor conocido como Pájaro Alberto, nació en la ciudad de Tijuana Baja California.

En los años 60 llega como integrante del grupo Tijuana Five con quienes graba un EP y un LP de covers en 1967, tocaron en los cafés cantantes de la Ciudad de México y abrieron el concierto en el Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes (hoy estadio del Cruz Azul), para los Byrds y Union Gap (que finalmente no tocó), el 9 de marzo 1969, el cual acabó en una enorme bronca.

En 1971 regresan a la Ciudad de México ya con el nombre de Love Army y graban 5 discos sencillos y EP de 1971 a 1972.

Autores de Caminata Cerebral una de las canciones mas representativas de la década de los setenta.

No llegan al Festival de Avándaro por quedarse atorados por subirse en una fuente, siendo uno de los grandes ausentes del mismo.

Al desaparecer Love Army, sus integrantes se fueron a otros grupos, mientras
Pájaro Alberto formó al grupo Sacrosaurio.

Blops was originally rooted in ’64, they started to play covers from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Cream. From the early Seventies Blops turned into a more progressive band and when classical pianoplayer Juan Carlos Villegas joined los Blops, they became one of the pioneers from the Chilean progressive movement: their music changed from structureless jams to elaborated compositions with an important role for keyboardist Juan. In february 1972 Blops performed on the festival entitled “Los Caminos Que Se Abren”, along with legends Los Jaivas, other young Chilean bands and the group Polen from Peru. Despite this strong competition the crowd named Blops as the most stunning gig but unfortunately no record company asked Blops to record an album. Then Argentine Jose ‘Pepe’ Romeu invited Blops for a concert in Buenos Aires and the band got the opportunity to record an album in the RCA studios, this was in 1973. In those days Blops featured Juan Pablo Orrego on bass and vocals, Eduardo Gatti on electri guitar and vocals, Juan Contreras on flute, keyboards and vocals, Juan Carlos Villegas on keyboards and synthesizers and Sergio Bezard on drums. The sound on their LP “Locomotora” has obvious echoes from Cream and The Doors and sometimes it brings early Focus on my mind.

The David - Another Day, Another Lifetime 1968 (Psychedelic)

The David, who came from Los Angeles, made an interesting album which has now become a collectors' item. The title track blends Eastern, chantlike overtones with Western orchestrational motifs. Other tracks are often characterised by driving rhythms played alongside oddly spaced melody lines. Much of the material - which was all written and composed by Warren Hansen - is heavily orchestrated. Hansen also invented an instrument, which he called the Plasmatar, to provide the vibrant rasp on one track Mirrors of Wood, which also contains some fine fuzztone. The final track Of Our Other Days had considerable commercial potential with a calypso- style melody and hypnotic beat.
The second 45 includes a fabulous non-LP scuzzy-sitar-punker: People Saying, People Seeing.

Formed in 1964, this quintet began as a Minneapolis-based pop band called The UNDERBEATS. They eventually relocated to Los Angeles and, changing their name to GYPSY, began pursuing a heavier, more complex sound, blending SANTANA-like guitar and organ riffs with vocals and arrangements reminiscent of early CHICAGO. They released two excellent albums on a small label in the early 70’s then switched to RCA who (it is said) pushed the band in a more commercial direction. Consequently, they lost their progressive edge and the subsequent two releases are no more than a collection of average, mid-70’s radio-friendly pop.
